I'm Free

I try to scratch my way out
Grasping desperately for any last remainder of light
My fingernails rip and tear, the pain is unbearable
But I have to make sure my friends are alright
I can see the light above me now
I am sure I could reach it if I wasn’t so weak
The light feels as if it is so far away
The water rises and it overcomes me
I’m kicking with all my might just to stay afloat
I just can’t hold on any longer
I let go and slip below the surface
I’m so sorry that I could not have been stronger

Serenity and peace surrounds me
As I take my last breath
I’m free
